LUNATISMS (2009-2011)

“Lunatisms” is a set of photographs exploring the issue of carnality. In these pictures, bodiliness is treated as a material used in sculpture or performance. The emotional charge contained in these images has its source both in the matter of the body, which is shaped naturally by biology and culturally by notable interventions of the artist or the model himself/herself. The project might refer both to academic deliberations on gender (the issue of biology, which according to Judith Butler turns out to be a category formed by culture, just like gender) and might intertwine with the tradition of contemporary photography (somewhere between the points of view of Diane Arbus and Araki).

Oneiric and erotic scenes, often including scenes of violence, employ the aesthetics of surrealism, which is also closely related to naturalism. Clashing them is aimed at knocking recipients out of a contemplative state (a sopoforic state which makes them fall into a somnambulist trans), which is the effect of cohesive poetics usually accompanying photographic exhibitions. “Lunatisms” is also a statement about photography which constitutes a medium basing on illusion, creation and fiction. A statement about photography which constitutes falsity, which turns out to be a very good carrier of visions and desires. It has the potential to create, and to induce disgust and desire. The works of Keymo remind us that their source lies not so much in nature as in the performance studies of cultural conventions.
