Tomasz Komorowski

Curators: Adam Klimczak, Jerzy Grzegorski

We get rid of UNNECESSARY photos. We don’t want to fill our homes with UNNECESSARY objects, which take too much space. We also dispose of UNNECESSARY memories about ones immortalized on photographic paper. Recollections of people known, unknown, forgotten – the galleries of characters in our minds. We leave behind what UNNECESSARY surrounds us.

Annihilation of a photo by shredding or burning it – not everyone is capable of such a radical gesture. Photos possess some sort of magic which prohibits one from destroying them. Those not bold enough to commit such an act, often pass the history to unknown people.

The “Unnecessary” exhibition is an attempt to understand the mechanism behind the act of disposing family archives through revision of the UNNECESSARY photos. They stay suspended in this peculiar state – they are no longer connected to people they depict, they belong to the forgotten, the UNNECESSARY.
Maybe it would be better if something of those UNNECESSARY endured. Are they really UNNECESSARY?
