From the very beginning the collection has been driven by a specific idea: to create a wide panorama presenting the image and identity of a contemporary woman by means of the most interesting and remarkable pieces of the Polish post-war photography.
A devoted mother, performer, neighbour, scandalmonger, Polish Venus, housewife, pop-culture icon, socialite, sexual object of the mass culture… Each of these “faces” of a woman’s identity is present at the exhibition, and, most importantly, in the interpretations of the most outstanding Polish photographers.
“Our aim is to show a woman seen through the eyes of both men, and women themselves. We are trying to answer the questions of how the image of a woman has evolved as well as how the perception of a woman in the social context has been changing in time. We would also like to pose several questions regarding current stereotypes: the functioning of a woman’s body in the public, media, artistic and commercial domains. That is why our collection comprises both works created according to classic beauty standards, as well as ones that refer to feminism, gender issues or transsexualism”, say Joanna and Krzysztof Madelski, authors of the collection.
The exhibition presents 150 works from the collection employing various techniques, including refined photographic techniques, avant-garde experiments, contemporary digital photography, installations, objects and videos.

Joanna and Krzysztof Madelski
Joanna Madelska is the founder of the EGO Gallery in Poznań, established in 1998. From the very beginning the gallery has presented the most interesting phenomena of contemporary Polish art from the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular attention to abstract trends, especially geometric abstraction.
The interests of the EGO Gallery reach far beyond the traditional artistic fields, such as painting, drawing, graphic arts or photography, as they are more focused on visual activities, including ones performed outside the gallery setting.
Krzysztof Madelski has for years been creating the collection of Polish contemporary, and mostly abstract, painting. Some of the works are presented at the headquarters of YES Biżuteria – the company of which he is a co-founder and co-owner. The permanent exhibition includes, among other things, works by Stanisław Fijałkowski, Leon Tarasewicz, Tomasz Ciecierski and Stefan Gierowski.
Adam Mazur – he is an art historian, critic, curator and specialist in American studies.
He works as a curator at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw. He is a lecturer at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw, the Academy of Photography in Warsaw and the Curatorial and Museum Studies at the Jagiellonian University. He is the editor-in-chief of the “Obieg” magazine and a member of the “Krytyka Polityczna” team. He is also a member of the Art Historians Association. His main interests include history and photography criticism. He has been a curator of the following exhibitions, among others: Efekt czerwonych oczu (2008), Wenus (2008), Nowi dokumentaliści (2006). In 2009, a book entitled „Kocham fotografię” [I love photography] was published. It was a collection of texts on photography, which, in the same year, had its second, expanded and revised edition. In December 2008, at the Faculty of History of the Warsaw University, he defended his doctoral thesis entitled „Fotografia w rozszerzonym polu. Społeczne i artystyczne użycia fotografii w Polsce” [A broader look at photography . Social and artistic applications of photography in Poland]. It constituted a basis for a book entitled “Historie fotografii w Polsce 1839-2009” [Histories of photography in Poland 1839-2009], awarded at the 55th Rev. Prof. Szczęsny Dettloff competition for the best research works of young art historians.
