Today, on 10 May, at the opening of the 11th Fotofestiwal – International Festival of Photography in Lodz – the winners of this year’s Grand Prix contest, which has been organised since 2006 by the Festival, were announced. The prize of PLN 10,000 for the project “DREAMLINE (2008-2011)” was awarded to Tomasz Lazar, the first Polish winner of the Grand Prix in the history of the Fotofestiwal.
Congratulations!
The photographic works of Tomasz Lazar are characterised by exceptional freshness. Lazar combines the classic approach to documentary photography with the subjective perspective of the author in a unique manner. These clean, black and white frames and simple shots definitely do not fit into the canon of traditional street photography. Tomek Lazar charms reality in an incredible way. He can present a city’s ordinary every-day life in an unconventional and surreal manner – this is how Krzysztof Candrowicz, Director of the Fotofestiwal, justified the jury’s decision.
Tomasz Lazar – an independent photographer, a member of ZPAF [Association of Polish Visual Artists], a graduate of the West Pomeranian University of Technology, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology. He attended numerous workshops, such as, for example, Tomasz Tomaszewski’s workshop or Eddie Adams Workshop in USA. A winner of photography contests in Poland and abroad (e.g. the Sony World Photography Award, the International Photography Award, BZWBK Press Photo). Recently he was nominated in the “Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year” category, in the International Photography Award contest. He took the second place in the World Press Photo 2012 contest in the “People in the News” category. Since 2011, he is a member of the Un-posed photography group, dealing with street photography. He is a coffee-lover and a good music enthusiast. He derives pleasure from spending time with other people and devotes most of his time to photography. Recently, he is constantly on the move.
